Aluflexpack welcomes key revisions and significant progress in legislative process on the PPWR

Media release

Reinach (Aargau), 11 January 2024

Aluflexpack AG (the “Group”), a leading European manufacturer of premium circular flexible packaging and barrier solutions, welcomes the significant progress in the legislative process on the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), which was marked by the start of the trilogue between the European Commission, European Parliament and European Council on 10 January 2024.

Key revisions approved by the European Parliament involve deletion of a proposed ban on single-serve aluminium coffee capsules, as long as they comply with recyclability requirements and categorisation of aluminium-based lids, such as those used for yogurt cups, as highly recyclable, among other things. The European Council’s position is also aligned with the European Parliament on recyclability of aluminium coffee capsules – whether these are defined as “metal” by the Council or “non-permeable” by the Parliament.

“We welcome the EU institutional efforts on establishing a unified PPWR, which gives producers of packaging, customers, suppliers and all other stakeholders a collective framework and establishes a single market with the ultimate goal of minimising environmental impact and achieving sustainability goals for a circular economy. We are pleased with the altered version of the PPWR, clarifying the position of aluminium coffee capsules, which are 100% recyclable. This will further strengthen our position in single-serve coffee capsules. Overall, the PPWR confirms that our product portfolio is positioned favourably to deliver future growth in an economically and ecologically balanced way”, says Johannes Steurer, CEO of the Group.

The interinstitutional negotiations follow the European Parliament’s voting on 22 November 2023, which approved the proposal by the European Commission with amendments, and the approval of the European Council’s official position on the PPWR on 18 December 2023. The trilogue will continue until 30 March 2024. The next step in the EU legislative process will be the EU Parliament’s voting on the final wording of the PPWR as well as the EU Council’s approval. The final version of the regulation is expected to be adapted by June 2024 and starting from year 2025, it will gradually come into force. The PPWR will encompass the entire EU and be applicable to all imported packaging.
